  • Re: Vitamin D

Don't know if this is helpful to the dog & cat people looking for vitamin D doses, but the AAFCO recommendations are 500 IU/kg of food for dogs (maintenance, growth & reproduction) and 500 IU/kg of food (maintenance) to 750 IU/kg of food (reproduction) for cats. Kittens seem to require 250 IU/kg of food according to Dr. Messonnier's

  • Re: Studies say high dose fish oil is immune suppressant - causing MORE susceptiblity to infections

I don't know if they offer it anymore but I got their Natural Wellness Certificate for Healthcare Professionals a couple of years ago. I found the classes to be very well organized, good material and taking the tests online meant I could do it at my convenience. I was assigned an advisor who got back to me in less than one day whenever I had questions

I have been asked by my local natural animal feed store to do nutritional counseling with her clients - I'm very excited. All of this info (epa/dha, how much, what ratio) will likely come in very handy in the counseling and I enjoy researching so it's a win win for me :) I'm actually planning on taking a few courses for certification - does

  • Re: Canine Fall and Spring Itching extravaganza-What gives?

I would say Ditto to everything swinn says. Including ditching the Iams. If your dog's on the edge immune wise, that's enough to go over the edge. Great marketing, poor food. Love swinn's suggestions for fish oil too. Get a good brand since cheap ones can be rancid or use poorer quality fish that have bioaccumulated toxins. Biotin and B

My feelings are just that - no research, just what makes sense to me. I am leery of the high/low /no DHA/EPA dosing that I've read about. My pardigm is that the way nature puts things together is probably best so whatever is the natural ratio found in fish seems logical to me for fish oil. My understanding is that ratio is 18:12 EPA/DHA. I take

  • Re: Question For Dr. Becker - Recipe Book

Dr. Becker, Will this be available as a Kindle book? I'm making the transition to an e-library since it's so much easier to search and takes up basically zero room. I hope this will be available either as Kindle or pdf. Sally

  • Re: Edible or avoid?

Hi swinn, I don't know particularly about prebiotic benefits of legumes, but Dr. Pitcairn does recommend beans and other legumes because they provide low cost protein. They must be cooked and/or presoaked which is kind of a pain but you can do larger groups and then freeze them. As far as raw pork, the CDC says "Freeze pork less than 6 inches

  • Re: If you use Advantage or products containing benzyl alcohol....

Hi Agape, It is my understanding that, in general, fleas do not attack a healthy dog. Not saying there couldn't be an isolated case, but just in general they infect weak or sick pets. Dr. Pitcairn's Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats recommends things like natural flea shampoos (containing d-limonene - dogs only) or using a lemon rinse

  • Re: HAPPY Act

Go Ron Paul!!! Vote Libertarian!!! lol - now that I have that out of my system, I don't blame you for taking any break you can get to try and get tax dollars back that are taken from you. I would too. It's the same way I feel about social security - I've been paying that sucker for years and I surely will try to get as much out as I can

  • Re: Transitioning to Raw Food

Thanks for all the info, swinn. I did try to put Pitcairn's recipe into Nutritionaldata but found it to be too cumbersome. For example, some ingredients (brewer's yeast, kelp) weren't in there. But I did add them as my own ingredients. Then I ran into the problem where he has a "Healthy Powder" that you make up and only add 6 T
