My 5 year old niece needs help!

My 5 year old niece has been having digestive issues since she was born. It is very difficult for her to have a bowel movement. My sister just found out that my niece has cerebral palsy, so that may be part of the reason she has such a hard time. One of her doctors suggested to give her a lot of soy so my sister has been giving her soymilk everyday. I have been reading about the dangers of soy so I told my sister that it's a bad idea. I think raw milk would be best for her, but my sister gets WIC brochures for regular or soy milk and can't afford to get raw milk. It is so sad that children are forced to eat unhealthy when they are poor. I suggested acidopholis milk - maybe the next best thing if covered by WIC? But she couldn't find any - she lives in a small town in a very rural area. I wish there was something I could suggest that is natural and healthy for her. Any suggestions?

The only thing that I could add is that I had a granddaughter who was similarly affected and her mother, my daughter, had to give her suppositories on a daily basis. With regard to milk, it would appear that goat's milk is more natural to the human digestive system than cow's milk. Your sister might consider avoiding using the microwave for heating or cooking purposes. There are, of course, other considerations that are worthy of testing which can be found on this site. A low-carb high-fat diet (not polyunsaturated fats) might be found to be beneficial for your niece's overall health.

Peace, Sorry to hear about the problem your niece is having constipation, which can be painful at times. From what I know about causes of constipation, her situation may be due to any medications she may be taking, dehydration to some degree, and rarely, an issue with her endocrine system, such as hypothyroidism. Two ways to treat her symptomatically is to make sure she gets enough fluid. Fluid meaing water and real fruit juice, perhaps. Also, make sure she gets plenty of foods with a lot of fiber, which may help. If this does not provide relief for her, you may want to consider having your niece seeing a gastro-intestinal doctor, or an endocrinologist doctor for evaluation. There are several causes for constipation, yet many are not typical in a child. Hope she gets better, Dan

Oh, I feel her pain. My children had horrible problems with bowel movements because of problems I passed on to them (I was practically bottle fed antibiotics as a child and teen). I literally had to pry their feces out! Enemas or anything else did not help and did not loosen them. But here is what I have found that took care of the problems and they do not have any more problems. Try magnesium citrate supplements (or magnesium oxide if she does not get a lot of calcium; the oxide form will stay mostly in the bowels). Basic Vitamins is a brand name. I am not sure if you or your sister has it in your area. The have very reasonable prices and are pretty good (since you can't buy the most expensive you should know what is cheap and works I guess). They have magnesium and an acidophilus (you should be able to get each for $5 or less). NOW Brand is available online at iherb.com (I have a coupon could for $5 off anything - no purchase limit) if you want to buy something for her and ship it. The acidophilus and bifido bacteria make a huge difference. I get Life Time strawberry flavored for my girls and their constipation Soy - I can not say enough bad things about it...Dr Mercola has many listed about soy's problems. It is horrible what the government force feeds people in need to perpetuate a 'need' for big government. I am sorry that I do not have the money right now or I would send her some things myself. She can shop for fresh food cheaply if she goes with what is on sale...and remember bananas are a good value for their price! Our menu revolves around what is on sale at the time. I don't buy many 'shelf' items as we eat mostly 'whole' foods, but the things that do go one the shelf I buy only when they are on sale and in bulk (sometimes hard to do bulk because of the expense). I hope she has a good source of water (without fluoride etc). Drinking lots of water is sometimes something people forget about...they think they need a 'beverage' all the time. Suggest that she find a new doctor or even hunt one out, if you can, that would be willing to work with her naturally (but not with SOY!). Best wishes and God Bless.

You sister is pretty stuck for choices.

I find myself wondering if kefir works with soy milk.

Kefir grains should be a once only purchase and are relatively inexpensive, and I understand fermented soy products are much safer. Kefir makes milk a probiotic liquid.

I have seen the quote 'good health begins in the gut' too many times to ignore it.
