Dear Dr. Mercola,
Two months ago I began taking Maca Root with DIM (1 capsule in the AM / 500 mg Maca / 100 mg DIM) to ease moderate pain due to endometriosis and an ovarian cyst. I began the Maca at or just after ovulation and experienced horrible pain. I continued to take the Maca for about a week and stopped. My period is consistantly between 24 to 28 days. However, following the initial use of Maca, my period began at Day 42.
I read one naturopathic doctor recommend taking Maca at the beginning of the cycle, so I tried the Maca again and began taking it at Day 3 of my cycle. I did not experience pain this time and have more energy. However, I am now on day 31 of my cycle and still have not started my period.
I would appreciate your perspective on this. I don't know whether I should continue taking it or stop it. No one seems to have actual research on Maca Root (double blind studies, etc), including the company I purchased it from, Whole World Botanicals.
Thank you.
Hello,
Due to the challenges this is creating with your hormonal system, I would recommend discontinuing the maca root. Often we use herbs as symptom care instead of getting to the core of our challenges.
We would welcome you as a patient in our clinic as we have helped many with Endometriosis as well as so many other auto immune challenges. This would require a two day visit to the Chicago area but any follow up sessions could be completed over the phone.
