I'm having a discussion with a friend about grapeseed oil and she wants to know if it's better than olive oil. I been searching on line with little success.

I found one article that says that grapeseed oil isn't good because of a high level of omega 6s and then lots of articles that say that it's good for you but don't really have much to back them up.

I like grapeseed oil because it's sustainable (made from the seeds left over after producing wine), has a high smoke point and neutral taste...so from a cooking standpoint it's a better choice. The smoke point for olive oil is much lower (100 degrees or more different) so you can't sautee or do any high heat applications and olive oil's strong flavor makes a poor choice for baking, etc., where you need a neutral oil.

And, then there's all the health benefits that are prescribed to grapeseed extract...many on this site.

Her question is (and now she has me wondering) which is the better choice from a health standpoint...olive oil or grapseed oil?

Thanks for everyone's help!

My understanding is that while olive oil is a healthier choice, it loses something when forced beyond 325 degrees. Grape seed oil is supposed to be good to 425 degrees and therefore preferred for cooking requiring more than 325. Olive oil is still the king for unheated on a salad.
